The Ruse of Bolton

Some say the Nights King was a Bolton, but Old Nan knew he was a Stark. What if both of those options were not mutually exclusive?

Could Roose skinflaynge into unRobb Greystark and the Nights King with Lady Barbrey as his Corpsequeen?

Here is the moneyquote between Robb and Bran in AGOT Bran VI:

Lord Roose never says a word, he only looks at me, and all I can think of is that room they have in the Dreadfort, where the Boltons hang the skins of their enemies.”

“That’s just one of Old Nan’s stories,” Bran said. A note of doubt crept into his voice.

“Isn’t it?” -Robb Stark

Just one look from Roose and Robb imagines his skin hanging in the Dreadfort. Many describe Roose as not possessing real human emotions, and he never raises his voice in anger even when frustrated or threatened – instead, he will silently stare intently at whoever offended him, mentally calculating how to destroy them.

“Roose Bolton’s own face was a pale grey mask.”

Masks are ones you can take off and put on. Now that GRRM has hinted at the possibility of Robbs skin hanging in the Dreadfort, Can he put Robb Starks mask on like Arya puts a skin on, Faceless Man style? Three silver stags says yes he can.

Boltons pride themselves on having worn flayed Stark skins as cloaks. That sounds very similar to what we see Arya exposed to with the Faceless Men. Using the flayed skins to skinchange into their appearance.

Roose can become a “Stark” Nights King like Old Nan mentioned through blood magic and the remains of Robb Stark. Roose stabbed Robb himself and may have saved his blood. And since we have not seen Robbs body beyond the Twins, it’s safe to assume Roose flayed him even if he gave his remains to the crown. All he needs is Robbs flayed skin, just like that is all Arya needs to become the other girls.

“Mother will be home soon. Maybe we can ride out to meet her when she comes. Wouldn’t that surprise her, to see you ahorse?” Even in the dark room, Bran could feel his brother’s smile. “And afterward, we’ll ride north to see the Wall. We won’t even tell Jon we’re coming, we’ll just be there one day, you and me. It will be an adventure.”

“An adventure,” Bran repeated wistfully. He heard his brother sob. The room was so dark he could not see the tears on Robb’s face, so he reached out and found his hand. Their fingers twined together.

-A Game of Thrones – Bran IV

Quite the surprise it will be.

By skinflanging into a Stark, Roose will then be able to mount an ice dragon or wield the Othersword of ice after absorbing the qualities of Starks kings-Otherblood. This might setting him up to be the anti-hero to Azor Ahannister who wields fiery Lightbringer. Read my article on Azor Ahannister for more.

The death of Roose and Ramsey who has the “eyes” may wake the Nights King from stone crypt of Winterfell. Roose may also get the original Othersword Ice in the crypt or pond of Winterfell and needs the Otherblood of the Starks to be able to wield it and not become destroyed by the cold. Starks never report feeling cold or shivering to my recollection. More on that see Weapons of Winter.

Ramsays eyes are precisely why he not only saved him, but took him in and legitimized him. Knowing full well that Bolton heir would not be tenable for any of his vassals in either the Kindom of the North or as Lord Paramount. Roose knows they would overthrow him. So Roose does all this, and claims Ramsey will poison/kill his Frey children too, but that doesn’t matter. We know one thing, Ramsay doesn’t kill with poison unless he can boil it and then stick it down your nose to go into your brain. Roose is sacrificing his own trueborn children like Domeric to give Roose power, energy and sustenance.

Roose Bolton is the original Rats Cook?

That may be why there are no Other members of House Bolton. He “ate” them all! Using them for his blood magic needs. Craster-metaphorically or literally.

As the one to stick the dagger into Robb at the Freys Red Wedding, Roose took the Frey wife knowing there will be no heirs, as they will be killed. Not only that, but Roose probably suggested the Red Wedding massacre to Walder, as that was exactly what the Rat cook did before. Walder accepted, thus conferring Rat Cookness to the Freys (as well? Does that transfer Rat Cooktidy or make two rat cooks?). By becoming Nights King, Roose would become immortal and live forever, never having to worry about heirs and having to eat them. Let the Freys deal with that now.

Two kings to wake the dragon. The father first, and then the son, so both die kings.

Does that apply to just dragons, magic creatures of fire or maybe magic monsters of the cold too? If dragons are the ultimate monster of light, then the “Great Other” is the ultimate monster of the night.

This will be a magical event that mirrors Daenerys Targaryen. Dany sacrificed Drogo, Rhaego, The Witch, and then her own life, adding her own kingsblood and the sacrifice of an innocent to the mix. Yep, I think Dany died and was reborn. Just a Jon will be. Fire and blood are not just the words of House Targaryen but the secret to giving birth to dragons that they long forgot.

Roose will go into something cold and icy, maybe the supercold black pool at Winterfell by the heart tree. Roose will die as Ramsay is in exquisite agony, then he will die. Then I think Ramsay will finally get his Reek back. Theon will die and his kingsblood may be the thing that seals the deal. Not just any kingsblood but the kingsblood of a people that worship the drowned god, the Great Other. Then from that supercool pond an Icedragon/Icebrandon or monstrous ice spider or some other monstrous icebeast.

Then Roose may come out of that pool a changed man, he changed because he will no longer be a man. He will be Nights King/Great Other/Champion of the great other. This was the only way he could free himself from the Rats Cook curse, so he can live forever as this icebeing monster. Let the Freys deal with this problem now and eat one another as they already began with the Frey cousins in Winterfell murdering each other to get further up the line of succession.

Only by unbecoming unRobb through wearing his skin can Roose become the Great Other/Nights King to become immune to cold and be able to wield Ice as the Starks have Otherblood flowing through them. Ice true ancestral Otherblade of the Starks hidden in Winterfell. Thus becoming the anti-Azor Ahannister who will wield Lightbringer. It will make for an interesting banter between the two of them as Roose could have had him killed.

Corpsequeen in The North!

The Barrowlands Corpse Queen. Just as Dany is a Dragon Queen, a Queen of the Barrowlands would be a Corpse Queen.

Lady Barbrey’s body will become the corporial vessel to the spirit of the Corpsequeen rise again once more.

TWOIF talked about the Corpsequeen of the Barrowlands and that lines up perfectly with Lady Barbrey and it is similar to the Otherish queen of the Nights King with her pale skin and blue eyes. This may be the reason why Lady Barbrey, the only person on a first name basis with Roose, was so insistent on finding the crypt of Winterfell. She feels very relaxed and casual with him, which leads me to think they are sleeping together. Now that child would be even worse than Ramsay. It makes me regret the day The Great Other raped his Corpsequeen.

The spirit of the original Corpsequeen and Nights King may be held prisoner by the iron swords and the Stark that must always be in Winterfell. By releasing those spirits through Mance rummaging through the crypt looking for the Horn of Jorumon and the lack of a Stark in Winterfell, this is their chance.

The Other candidates I see the Corpsequeen are Mellisandre for Jon/Stannis and Meera for Bran. Meera may be “like a mirror” or twin image of Jon snow, with one twin raised in Winterfell and the other in Greywater watch to make sure at least one survives if Robert found out. As such she is also the song of ice and fire with magic blood equal to Jon. GRRM commissioned a custom figurine of Melissandre all in blue and holding a blue fire for his personal collection.
