The Hero’s Journey Begins At The Darkest Point

“You enter the forest
at the darkest point,
where there is no path.

Where there is a way or path,
it is someone else’s path.

You are not on your own path.

If you follow someone else’s way,
you are not going to realize
your potential.”

“A bit of advice
Given to a young Native American
At the time of his initiation:
As you go the way of life,
You will see a great chasm. Jump.
It is not as wide as you think.”

“I don’t believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive.”

― Joseph Campbell, The Joseph Campbell Companion

The song of songs sings of the jump. It’s not as wide as you think.

Jump.

  1. I’ve bern drawn to Joseph Campbell very much lately. My favorite quote of his is from “The Hero With a Thousand Faces,” and it concerns the hero’s path.

“And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god. Where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves. Where we had thought to travel outwards, we shall come to the center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.” I hope there aren’t too many typos in this. The comment box is very tiny. I apologize if there are.
