The Dance of The Dragons is Plural

Shireen Baratheon by YvyB13

Tonight’s episode where Shireen was sacrifice left me spellbound, traumatized and amazed. I wrote that exactly this would happen, but when I typed that post I did not hear Shireen Baratheon’s shrieks and cries and see the sheer horror on her face. It was awful.

Firstly a backgrounder and then we will get to the hidden meaning of the show’s title.

Months ago I wrote about Shireen being sacrificed by Melissandre and now that the show is overtaking the books, it is my first correct prediction. While I was very far from alone in predicting Shireen would be sacrificed, it is a pretty common theory to hold, I am the only one to say Jon is not the dragon she is trying to wake. Melissandre may still wake Jon but what she really wants is to wake another kind of dragon entirely.

The stone dragon Melissandre is trying to wake is Bran the ice dragon. Firstly a blood sacrifice of someone with greyscale is made to wake the dragon but more importantly the stone dragon is made out of ice.

Read the stone dragon post for more details. The most important points last on the contrast between Dany’s vision of a stone best taking wing and the description of ice dragons:

Dany’s vision:

From a smoking tower, a great stone beast took wing, breathing shadow fire. . .

Let’s take a look at this passage from TWOIF on a different sort of dragon:

Of all the queer and fabulous denizens of the Shivering Sea, however, the greatest are the ice dragons. These colossal beasts, many times larger than the dragons of Valyria, are said to be made of living ice, with eyes of pale blue crystal and vast translucent wings through which the moon and stars can be glimpsed as they wheel across the sky. Whereas common dragons (if any dragon can truly be said to be common) breathe flame, ice dragons supposedly breathe cold, a chill so terrible that it can freeze a man solid in half a heartbeat.

The World of Ice and Fire – Beyond the Free Cities: The Shivering Sea

The ice dragon is translucent. If the moon was behind it, it would look like it is a moon dragon. If the stars are behind it, you could say it is a star dragon. And if The IceBrandon, The Stark ice dragon named Winter (who Is Coming), was in front a stone tower, you could say it is a stone dragon. The tower it took wing of is of course the Broken Tower in Winterfell where Bran not only fell, but this is where Bran took wing as the ice dragon. The shadow fire is his grey icefyre.

Dance of The Dragons

The show was called Dance of The Dragons, which was a conflict between competing dragons for the throne. In the series there are no competing dragons to Daenery’s dragons…. or are there?

The TellTale Game of Thrones game has a new episode coming out called The Ice Dragon. They would not be allowed to reveal the ice dragon in a cell phone game before it is revealed on the show.

The IceBrandon is Coming.

Winter is flying.
